This compelling and evocative photography project was born from the resilient spirits of Ukrainian women in Surrey who united through an arts-for-wellbeing programme in Farnham.
Supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project beautifully chronicles the deeply personal journeys of individuals who have left behind their homes, friends and family in Ukraine. It explores their experiences of navigating life in the UK while grappling with the enduring trauma of war.
Established in November 2022, the Ukraine art group has been nurtured by Creative Response Arts and Activate Learning. Under the guidance of Natalia Sharomova, a talented photojournalist who taught portrait photography, group members harnessed their creativity and skills to capture their experiences.
Each striking portrait in the exhibition is complemented by poignant narratives told in the sitters' own words (translated into English) Visitors will also have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the original Ukrainian versions, enriching the experience.
New House Art Space is thrilled to host this powerful exhibition, as it holds immense political and emotional significance in these challenging times marked by conflict. By celebrating the resilience and creativity of Ukrainian women, we not only honour their stories but also amplify the voices of those affected by war. Our aim is to foster understanding and compassion through the universal language of art.
