Paul Gauguin is an often misunderstood artist, associated simply with his Tahitian figure groups. He was not recognised as a leading artist in his lifetime but thanks to his dealer, he became seen as important shortly after his death and has remained a leading Post-Impressionist in critical discourse.
This talk with Laurence will examine his work and motivation. Once saying he wanted to escape from "everything that is artificial and conventional" about European art he hoped to find an idyllic paradise in Tahiti. He was sadly disappointed in his preconceptions of Tahitian life.
