On Sunday July 3rd, at 7.30pm, The Chantry Singers will be reuniting with the award-winning folk duo Ninebarrow in a unique blend of contemporary folk music with choral textures. The Chantry Singers’ musical director, Roy Rashbrook, had arranged several of Ninebarrow’s beautiful songs before, which were performed together a few years ago in concerts in Guildford and Poole. When further concerts were interrupted by the pandemic, a recording of one of these songs, “The Hour of the Blackbird”, was made by the choir, together with members of Roy’s other choir and Ninebarrow themselves, who then released the song as a single in aid of the mental health charity MIND. The song went on to be broadcast several times on national radio, resulting in BBC Radio 2’s Mark Radcliffe calling it “one of the tracks of the year”. Since then, Ninebarrow have recorded a new album, and Roy has arranged seven of these new songs, as well as a brand new, as yet unreleased track called “Names in the Sky”. So for a choral concert (or indeed a folk music gig) unlike any other, come along on July 3rd to the United Reformed Church in Portsmouth Road. If you are looking for something musically interesting to enjoy during the month of January, The Chantry Singers Guildford have a day long workshop planned for singers and instrumentalists which might fit the bill.   On January 15th we are hosting an all-day workshop of Venetian choral and instrumental music led by Gawain Glenton, Roy Rashbrook and the English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble. The workshop, which will run from 10.00-5.30pm, is open to choral singers and instrumentalists wanting to learn and perform with this world-class ensemble and with two accomplished directors of music who are both renowned soloists, teachers and performers with distinguished careers.

All voice parts are welcome and players of modern string instruments, sackbuts or cornetts. The cost is £25 for the day.  The venues for the day are the historic buildings of the Royal Grammar School Guildford and the lovely acoustic of Holy Trinity Church where we will hold a free informal concert at the end of the day for friends and supporters. Both venues are a 5-10 minute walk from Guildford train station and there are plenty of car parks nearby.

Music will include pieces by Gabrieli, de Wert and Merulo and will be circulated prior to the workshop so that participants can familiarise themselves with some of the repertoire. The day will include separate rehearsals for instrumentalists and singers with the chance to come together for the concert to celebrate a good day’s work! There will be an hour and a half’s break in the middle of the day to relax and enjoy exploring Guildford’s eateries and historic high street.

The workshop can be booked to stand alone or singers can choose to join Chantry Singers for a free term of rehearsals to continue working on the repertoire. We will come together again with ECSE for a polished performance on 26 March 2022 in St Nicholas Church Guildford. Rehearsals will take place on Tuesday evenings.

In the light of current concerns about the Omicron variant of Covid 19, we will ask participants to bring evidence of a recent negative lateral flow test and we will ensure that good practice with regard to Covid mitigation is observed. Should we need to cancel, a full refund will be given.  If you have any questions before booking please contact chantrysingers@gmail.com

A Guildford-based chamber choir of around 30 members, The Chantry Singers celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2013. Today they are one of the foremost chamber choirs in the area, giving high quality performances of choral works ranging from Renaissance masterpieces to music by contemporary composers. The choir specialises in presenting highly unusual themed programmes which often combine unfamiliar and slightly challenging music alongside old favourites.
